The variety of approaches to figurative art is enormous and almost as diverse as the history of art itself. In painting, figuration ranges from Photorealism (like that of Chuck Close) at one end of the spectrum to nearly abstract (like Pablo Picasso’s Analytic Cubism) at the other. For much of the 20th century, figurative painting was largely ignored by the Western avant-garde, but the course changed with the 1980s emergence of figurative painters like Anselm Kiefer, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and David Salle. #figuativeart #pdxart

A brief history on figurative art: Origins of figurative art can be traced back to the rock carvings or petroglyphs that were made by early man in the Paleolithic period. These are the early attempts of man to describe the world around them using art. Among the oldest paintings that use the concept of Figurative Art is a painting of an ancient Roman woman on a balcony. It can be found in the Getty Villa Museum in Pacific Palisades, California. The artwork has no name and the painter could not be identified, but it shows that from very early in history, man has been depicting human forms in paintings, portraits, and sculptures. #figurativeart #pdxart
